The Chatham Capitol Theatre History
  • The next 20 years - Many minor renovations took place including seating capacity being reduced to 1,000 & the relocation of the ticket booth from inside to the outside of the theatre
  • 1975 - The theatre was split down the center into two large cinemas of 472 seats each
  • 1993 - Famous Players Theatres abandoned the property as a viable movie theatre
  • Summer 1995 - The Chatham City Council put forth a proposal to demolish the theatre
  • November 1995 - The Chatham Capitol Theatre Coalition proposed to save the theatre and restore it as an entertainment venue
  • December 4, 1996 - The Chatham Capitol Theatre Association acquired the theatre property from the city
  • January 3, 1997 – Interior mouldings and trim manufactured and installed
  • January 1, 2002 – Present - Washrooms facilities were installed on the 1st floor and lower levels. An additional access to the basement areas was completed. Construction continues on theatre auditorium and superstructure
